| Bioplastics |
 |
Unlike conventional plastics made from oil or natural gas, bioplastics are manufactured from renewable biological materials such as cornstarch, sugar, and hemp oil. These materials are derived from annual crops that regenerate during the next growing season.
Bioplastic types include:
- Polylactic Acid (PLA), a high-strength, high-modulus plastic similar to polystyrene or polyethylene made from fermenting cornstarch,
- Thermoplastic starch derived from corn, wheat, potato, or wood,
- Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) produced from fermenting sugars and vegetable oils using genetically enhanced bacteria.
